New Work, Ceramics and Leather

After a nice vacation and plenty of video games I got back to work.

Fetus animal totems, fertility totems, a fictional animal skull, and a skull based on Paranthropus aethiopicus. 

New sugar skulls, made by me and glazed by my mother.

A new style of mask I'm playing with is to boil vegetable tanned leather in water, and press it over a a plaster mold of my face with one of my bronze masks

I wasn't happy with the first try so I boiled the leather longer and did it again, with much better results,

Isn't the color of my kitchen walls terrible?

Four done so far:

Art Deco Dieselpunk Goggles

To make the arms of the goggles I riveted two pieces of brass together and sanded them to the same shape, then I drew the design I wanted onto the metal.

I used a jewelers saw to cut them apart.

Leaving them riveted together until I sanded the freshly cut areas so that they would stay identical

These pieces will attach to the brass brackets I made earlier.

 Next I cut leather to back the arms with.

Unfortunately I cut two pieces for the same side. Oops.

The leather is side-specific because the texture is very different on each side, one is more like suede, but I want to smoother side to be visible and against the skin..

The arms were riveted to the brackets.

Then I traced the eye pattern onto the brass mesh and cut it out with hand shears.

One lens in place.

Art Deco hero goggles

Cast in bronze the art deco goggles from a few weeks ago, patina'd black with a leather lining, still need to make them wearable.

Bronze mask

I posted images from this mask while it was in progress last year, now it is mostly compete, though the polished metal has tarnished a bit. It has a leather lining holding the brass scales and is displayed on the familiar plaster cast.
